A simple reminder for loving ourselves♥
Many of us grew up not knowing what love was
Instead what we believed to be love
Was a carefully controlled commodity
That we earnt if we were good enough
That we deserved if we were quiet
That we were given if we pleased others
And we spent our adult relationships
Living out this very same dynamic …
We are people pleasers
We put the needs of others above our own
We give people the benefit of the doubt
We ignore the orange flags
We accept selfish behaviour in others
Our relationships are unbalanced…
Where we seem to be the ones
Giving all the giving
We are blind to the signs
We don’t want to acknowledge the warning bells …
But they keep on ringing…
Until they become so blatenly loud
That even we cannot ignore them any longer
And when we do finally see the situation
For what it really is …
We are angry
We are resentful
And we hurt
Because we thought that person loved us
We believed they had our best interests at heart…
We were programmed to think it was love
We were conditioned to feel unworthy
Of being loved unconditionally
And then we come to realise…
That we thought it was them
Not putting our needs first …
But instead it was us
We thought it was them
Not making us a priority …
But instead it was us
We thought it was them
Not honouring us …
But instead It was us
We thought it was them
Ignoring our feelings…
But instead it was us
And we thought it was them
Who didn’t love us …
But instead it was us
The journey keeps on bringing us back
To self honour
To self worth
To self love
And reminding us
That only we can make ourselves
Our number one priority
